Welcome to

We are Jen and Steve, the Reid/Viau family.

We are on a mission to reduce our household, as well as individual, carbon footprint.

Part of what inspired this website is a Canadian Geographic contest called Live Net Zero—there will be various references to the challenges involved in this contest as well as our efforts to build a community of people looking to live net zero.

We wish to share what we learn on our 'Net Zero' journey with others in our community.

Individual Efforts
to Battle the Climate Crisis

It's an easy cop out to use the "I'm just one person, what difference will it make" line. Every action matters, whether diretly or through inspiring someone else to make changes in their lifestyle too. Here are some things you can do to make a difference:

  • Drive less. Fly less. Walk and bike more.
  • Use a renewable energy provider for your electricity.
  • Install a high-efficiency heat pump, and avoid using air conditioning as much as possible.
  • Talk to friends, family, and coworkers about the climate crisis and possible solutions. Work to get them involved.
  • Eat less beef and dairy, and support local farmer's markets as long as they are available. Work to avoid foods that required significant refrigerated shipping to get to you.
  • Use a renewable energy provider for your electricity—we use Bullfrog Power.
  • Call your MP, MPP, and city councillor and tell them you want action on climate change.
  • Improve your home's attic and basement insulation, weatherstripping, and caulking around doors and windows to seal up your 'home envelope'.
  • Move your money to a credit union and divest any investments in the fossil fuel industry.
  • Be engaged: put up posters, attend meetings/rallies/protests, tell election candidates that your vote is contingent on efforts they will make to battle climate change and then VOTE!
